The Lucas County Department of Planning and Development operates the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program. But what is WIOA?
WIOA is landmark legislation that is designed to strengthen and improve our nation’s public workforce system and help get Americans, including youth and those with significant barriers to employment, into high-quality jobs and careers and help employers hire and retain skilled workers. WIOA was signed into law in 2014, and is designed to help job seekers access employment, education, training, and support services to succeed in the labor market.
How Can WIOA Help?
One of the programs we offer through WIOA is our Individual Training Account (ITA), which provides eligible participants training services from eligible providers for in-demand occupations. If you are thinking about training for a new career, WIOA is here to assist you. We want to make sure everyone has the skills they need for a successful career. Our staff will help you navigate your path to success.
We also have programs for our young adults 14 to 24 who need help with employment and training; through our Lucas County Comprehensive Case Management and Employment Program (CCMEP)
WIOA can help our local businesses with training cost for new hires and upskilling your current workforce so that you company and stay competitive and adapt their workforce to changing needs.
WIOA Changes Lives
Within our program, the transformative journey of individuals like Hannah underscores the profound impact we have on lives. Hannah, originally from Sierra Leone, arrived in 2015 with a dream to elevate her career as a State Tested Nursing Assistant (STNA) to the next level. Fueling her aspirations, she tapped into the opportunities provided by the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) program.
With unwavering determination, Hannah embraced the support and funding offered by WIOA to return to school. Her tenacity led her to graduate in October of 2023, marking a significant milestone in her pursuit of excellence. Subsequently, she conquered the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) in December, obtaining her licenses and realizing her dream of becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN).
Hannah’s success story is a testament to the collaborative efforts of WIOA and our dedicated staff. By providing not just financial assistance but also personalized guidance and support, we enable individuals like Hannah to overcome barriers and access the opportunities needed to achieve their career goals. This personalized approach defines our commitment to fostering success and empowering individuals to reach new heights in their professional journeys.
